In response to the burgeoning population and economic activity, Dunnellon was incorporated as a city on April 21, 1891. The city was named after John F. Dunn, a local lawyer-turned-banker who played a significant role in its development. Decline of the Phosphate Industry
The phosphate boom in Dunnellon was short-lived. By the early 1910s, the demand for hard rock phosphate declined, and the industry shifted south to Polk County, where new deposits were discovered. The closure of mines in Dunnellon led to economic downturns, and many residents moved away in search of employment opportunities elsewhere. Despite these challenges, Dunnellon managed to survive the bust period, unlike other nearby phosphate towns such as Romeo, LeRoy, Brewster, and Parkersburg.
Historic Preservation and Modern Dunnellon
Today, Dunnellon is known for its well-preserved historic district, the Dunnellon Boomtown Historic District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 8, 1988. The district encompasses approximately 560 acres and includes 70 historic buildings, many of which have been renovated and opened to the public as quaint shops offering antiques, art, and other unique finds.
The city's historic train depot, built in 1908, now serves as the headquarters for the Greater Dunnellon Historical Society and houses exhibits marking local history, including a series of colorful murals. Additionally, the historic opera house hosts a variety of cultural events throughout the year, featuring talented local and visiting performers. shutdown123
